I just caught up with the fact that John passed away in late February. It's a tragic loss for those who knew and loved him in Spring Lake but also those like myself who grew up with him in Waukegan, IL. John was a talented athlete especially in baseball. Good hitter and good catcher as well. As I was a pitcher we formed a battery at the Pony League level in our early teens. But off the baseball diamond he was also a wonderful person and a great friend. So better late than never I offer my condolences to his brother Leroy, sister Arlene and sons out there in Portland. My condolences & prayers to the Zaugra family. John & I worked & were best friends at GVSU together for over 45 years. John was not a good man, he was the best man. We affectionately called each other brother & sister. ( I, an African American woman & he a Caucasian man). Our coworkers would often ask “have you seen your brother or your sister?” We always looked out for each others However, I would respond, “am I my brother’s keeper?”So, John you finally get your chance to be your heavenly sister’s keeper and look out after me here on earth. I cherished John’s friendship over the past 10 years. I first meet John on the pickleball courts, where we played and laughed together several times a week. John and I also connect through St Patrick Catholic Church once a week, although John attended church everyday. He told me I go to daily Mass for his wife. I will forever remember John as a kind and fun friend.
