Mr. Herbert "Shan" Hofmann's Obituary
Mr. Herbert S. “Shan” Hofmann, age 76, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 19, 2005. He was born in Pontiac, MI on June 28, 1929 to Louis and Martha (Rosso) Hofmann, and had spent most of his adult life in the Muskegon area. Mr. Hofmann was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in Korea directly under the 8th Army Headquarters in the 148th Graves Registration Company. After he returned from Korea, he spent 26 years in the Army Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Shan was a graduate of Ohio University where he received his Bachelor and Masters Degree in Education. Mr. Hofmann retired from Muskegon Community College in 1985 after 18 years of teaching history and political science. He was a member of McGraft Memorial Congregational Church where he served in many various capacities including the church choir and as a deacon. Shan was a member of the VFW Post 3195, the American Legion Post 98, a member of the Torch Club, and the Muskegon Stamp Club. Mr. Hofmann played his accordion at 5 Muskegon nursing homes regularly, and volunteered for the Red Cross. He loved to travel and was an avid baseball enthusiast. On March 17, 2001, he married the former Nelda Moreau and she SURVIVES him along with 2 children, Diane (Jerry) Walkowski and Bob Hofmann; 2 grandchildren, Christopher and Sean Walkowski; 1 brother, Dr. William B. (Sherry) Hofmann of Cincinnati, OH; and nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be 11AM Friday at McGraft Memorial Congregational Church (1617 Palmer Blvd.) with Rev. Dr. Gerald Wahr officiating. VISITATION will be 10-11AM Friday at Church.
