Dear Tom,
You have been and will continue to be such an important part of my sister Jill and her family's lives. Thank you for being there for them for all these years, especially for Travis, you mean't the world to him, and I know he misses you with all his heart. You and I have not crossed paths very frequently because I have been living in Florida for the past 12 years, but I feel you are family, and I will miss you kind smile when I come home to visit.I have known you to always be giving, unselfish and reliable. Through your illness you were so strong and poised. I heard that Travis wanted to take you on a trip, somewhere you have always wanted to go, and you replied you justed wanted to spend as much time as possible with Travis, Jill and the boys (and of course Breezy).Even though you will be missed by many, you no longer are in pain, and you are at peace in a better place. I am grateful to have met you and that I was able to get to know you for the short time that I have been a part of the Smith family. I wish more people in this world were like your kind....honest, devoted, caring and inspirational. Dear Tom,
I wanted to thank you for being such a special part of our family. You have shared your influence and wisdom with us for so many years. You have celebrated many occasions with us such as standing up for us in our wedding, coming over and celebrating holidays and birthdays, and a countless numbers of dinners where Treston and Gavin would argue over who would sit next to you during the meals. Thank you doesn't seem like enough for enjoying the many good times we have shared together and helping us work through the bumpy times that life has to offer. We already miss your presence and your heart warming smile, but I can't thank you enough for all of the wonderful memories you left us with. I will miss the way you would just light up when you saw the boys and they would do the same when they saw you. Treston and Gavin already have said how much they miss their "Uncle Tom". Tom,
It was truly overwhelming to see the attendance at your memorial service to honor you - My Uncle. I have great early memories down at the old car lot with Duke - yes he does like pickles.. Learning to drive a stick shift in the parking lot at 14. I only knew 1st and reverse because I couldn't leave the parking lot. At 16 driving a different car every 2 weeks and my brother making sure I was not somewhere I was not supposed to be with dealer plates. I have great memories of when we first got the cabin. We had some awesome bonfires burning junk in the barn and old furniture, redoing things to make it liveable. We had some wonderful family times up there. I was going through some pictures and found several of you reading to my kids. Books that you bought them. The Gold Bug book and Where's Waldo. They sure did like to hunt for those hidden items. They would search over and over again sitting on your lap. We had many Thanksgiving, Christmas and Birthday dinners with you, one without sugar in the pumpkin pie.... You will truly be missed by your family and know that we loved you.

Tom:
You were the great mediator in life. Many times mediating disputes between friends, politicians, businessmen, and yes, by brother and I. You were loved by so many and never alone. You filled a deep void for Travis and I. You made it to all our school graduations, military graduations,sporting events, weddings, all our childrens birthday parties, holidays and broke bread with us on a regular basis. I will forever, cherish our time together. You gave Travis and I so much of your time. I will forever remember the trips we took, the places we saw and the history lessons along the way. The search for the great white snow for that great snowmobile ride. The History of the tri-cities, the U.P. and Michigan. We would spend an entire day driving around Manistee and Mason Counties; you as my tour guide and historian. You gave Travis and I the time and attention of any great father. You helped temper this cowboy and bulldog into the man and father I am today. I will forever remember you. I will pass your legacy and teachings on to my children. You were life's greatest spectator and truly enjoyed other people's success. Most inportantly you comforted the failures. You helped me find the lesson from each struggle. I credit you for tempering me to the man I am today. My wish for you is to know how much and by how many you were loved. You will never be alone or forgotten. Miss you. God Bless and God Speed. Tom, you meant the world to my sons,Travis and Matthew, especially Travis. Yiu were a dear friend, a colleague, a teacher, a counselor, and a father. They treasured the special times with you:Holidays, birthdays,family get together times, halloweens, and many wonderful times at the cabin. You helped mold both of them into better caring and loving individuals. I could never repay you for all you did for Travis to help him grow grow into the loving, caring, honest person and good husband and father that he is.

Tom I will truly miss you. When I came to work at the Grand Haven Post I got to know you right away, as we spent a lot of time on the phone talking tires, oil and car maintenance. You helped me a lot over the years when I was reseaching the history of the Grand Haven State Police Post, in fact all the pictures I have of the old posts were from you. You were always willing to help anyone, you loved life, history and most of all family, we will all miss you Tom.
