David O. Kooi

Kooi, age 72, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at Butterworth in Grand Rapids. He was born on October 3, 1949 in Muskegon to Cornelius “Kay” and Helen (Dahlof) Kooi and resided in the area most of his life. David was a lifelong member of Olivet Evangelical Free Church, where he was a youth leader for many years, served as an Elder and was on the Mission Committee. For a time he directed both the youth and adult choirs. David worked as a Social Worker, and then a Trainer for Community Mental Health for 44 years before retiring in 2015. Throughout that time, Dave coached Y soccer, was instrumental in starting the Muskegon Soccer Club, served as the Muskegon High School boys and girls soccer coach, and later coached swimming and diving there as well. After retiring he found great joy in substitute teaching and driving bus for Montague Schools and New Era Christian. He loved working with kids! On June 12, 1971 he married the former Donna DeVries and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last June. Dave is survived by his wife, Donna; son, Matthew (Becky) Kooi and their children, Tyler (Raquel), Ross (Kendall), Andrew, and Audrey; son, Nathan (Kayla) Kooi and their children, Ethan, Dominic, Emmy, Oliver, and Millie; daughter, Becky (Chad) Petersen and their children, Owen and Eli; and brother, Tim (Donna) Kooi. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, “Kay” and Helen; and sister, Linda Kooi. A Celebration of Dave’s Life will be 11AM Monday, April 4, 2022 at Olivet Evangelical Free Church (6790 Harvey Rd. Spring Lake, MI 49456) with Pastor Craig Cramblet officiating. Visitation with Dave’s family will be 4-7 PM Sunday, April 3, 2022 also at Olivet Evangelical Free Church. Memorial Contributions in Dave’s name to Olivet Evangelical Free Church, Muskegon Rescue Mission, or Spectrum Ministries Tijuana, Mexico will be appreciated.
