I worked with Joe at the Grand Rapids MDOT office and kept in touch through his time at MDOT. He was always so proud of his daughter. That man was such a philosopher! I was shocked to hear of his passing because I didn't know he was ill. He was such a unique individual and I am so sad that he is gone. My condolensces to his daughter and family.##imported-begin##Patty Johnson##imported-end##
I knew Joe as a fellow contra dancer, and remember him for the twinkle in his eyes and his red dance shoes. Joe and I spent some time more recently talking about life, illness and death in a series of telephone conversations. His bravery and unfailing good humor touched me. Joe expressed the deepest love for Megan, and was very concerned for her well-being. I will miss Joe, but I know his spirit will be present at every contra dance.##imported-begin##John English##imported-end##
Dear Margaret and Family:
Joe was our good friend. How we enjoy his visits and good conversation. Ted as his Scout Master was so proud when he made Eagle Scout, they both earned the "Order of the Arrow" at the same time. We send our sincere sympathy to all, we will miss him also.

Joe was part of the contra dancing community in Lansing. Joe danced with enthusiasm and joy. I will miss meeting him in a contra line and together sharing this time of complete enjoyment of the music and the friends on the dance floor. Hands four, Joe, with those around you now and dance some more.##imported-begin##David Baur##imported-end##

I served with Joseph on the YMCA board. Joseph and I served on the facilities and other committees together. He was very committed to and passionate about the YMCA and its success. It was a joy serving with Joseph.
I was very sorry to hear of Joseph's passing. Joseph told me he was ill a while ago and we'd been praying for him ever since. It occurred to me on Monday July 16th, about mid-day, that I needed to call Joseph to see how he was doing. Before I could make that call, I was notified that he had passed.
On behalf of myself and members of our church where Joseph is on our prayer list, I wish to express our heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends.

Dear Miller Family,
We want to extend our sorrow in the passing of Mr. Miller. We hope we were able to make a difference inhis last earthly days. It was our pleasure to care for him and to meet his family.
Thank you for coming to "OUR HOME".
May God Bless You Always##imported-begin##Poppen Hospice Residence##imported-end##
My husband and I have been Joe's neighbors for about 17 years. We watched him start with one house, then add a second then finally the 3rd: three houses in a row, across the street from us. Joe loved working on those houses, and gutting the courses, and residing and roofing the courses. He enjoyed giving neighbors a tour of west-most house, which he had put the most effort into re-habbing.
Joe starting his mower or leaf blower or edge trimmer up was a sign that spring was here, as he was always first in the neighborhood to start his lawn work. We new something was up, when this spring came, and there was no sight of a shirtless-Joe in shorts, or sound of his mower..
Joe was a very kind person, who cared for his fellow man. He was quick to help folks who needed assistance. He also had a wicked sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories and chit-chatting on the side walk.
He will be missed.##imported-begin##Melanie Rogers##imported-end##
