January 9, 1939 - January 27, 2022
Thomas M. Maloy, age 83 of Grand Haven, formerly of Norton Shores, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022 at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon. He was loved as a husband, father, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend. Tom was born on January 9, 1939 in Johnstown, PA, where he attended Bishop McCort High School. He earned a B.A. in business from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. in economics from Kent State University. He did doctoral work in economics at Case-Western Reserve University while teaching at Cleveland State, the beginning of a 35-year career in education. In Cleveland Tom met and married Angela (Steigerwald) in 1969, and the couple had two children. Tom taught at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire before moving with his family to Michigan in 1976 to teach economics at Muskegon Community College, where he also mentored the Honors Program. He retired from MCC in 1999. Tom was active at St. Francis de Sales Parish and in the Muskegon Catholic Schools parent organizations, serving as president of the Home and School Association. He volunteered at Nelson School in the PALS Program. A member of the Muskegon History Club, he worked on several boards, including Muskegon Ambucs, the Muskegon Irish-American Society, and the Lakeshore Museum Center. Tom enjoyed golfing, bowling, reading, and discussions about politics and sports. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2000 and proved resilient in so many ways, moving to Village at the Pines in Grand Haven in 2015, where he and his wife joined St Patrick-St. Anthony Parish. Tom’s positive spirit and lovable sense of humor will be gratefully remembered by Angela, his wife of 52 years; son Jeffrey (Sarah) of Danbury, CT; daughter Jennifer (Abram Buchta) of San Antonio, TX; brother James (Janet) of Wayne, NJ; sister Paulette of Denver; sister Margaret (Tom Buch) of Denver; brother-in-law Albert Steigerwald of Lyndhurst, OH; many nieces, nephews and friends, all of whom admired his strength and optimism. Tom was preceded in death by his parents Joseph P. and Pauline (Burke) Maloy and a sister Mary Jo. Tom loved to plan gatherings of family and friends, and such an event honoring his life and contributions will occur later in the year, when concerns regarding Covid have decreased. The family would like to thank the staff at Grand Pines Assisted Living for their remarkable care and friendship over the past five years. A Memorial Mass will be held for Tom at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 23,2022 at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish, 920 Fulton St., Grand Haven, MI. Visitation for family and friends will take place from 12 until 2:00 p.m. in the greeting area. A buffet will be served. Friends may choose to attend both or either one of the events. Memorials may be sent to Lakeshore Museum Center, 430 W. Clay Ave., Muskegon, MI 49440 (lakeshoremuseum.org) or Michigan Parkinson Foundation, 30400 Telegraph Rd., Suite. 150, Bingham Farms, MI 48025 (parkinsonsmi.org).
