Harold Bretschneider, age 90, of Grand Haven passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at a local care facility. He was born January 7, 1920, in Grand Haven to Henry and Alice (Braun) Bretschneider, and he married the former Bernice Ben Read Obituary
The entire Gebhart family has very fond meories of Harold, Bernice and the Bretschneider family. The memories began when they visited Bernice's parents in Belleville and continued through our many visits to Michigan to visit them. Everyone loved his stories and his kindness. Uncle Harold was very special to me. I remember the many, many summers spent visiting in Michigan. We were either at the Lake or in the studio playing with old film & dressing up. I remember his humor & how he loved to scare me. I remember how he would wiggle his ears to get Deanne to smile for pictures. We loved the train room upstairs when we were kids. Matt enjoyed fishing with Uncle Harold & watching him clean the fish he caught even though many of them were not much more than a bite when done. I remember the sand dune rides. Oh what fun! I will never forget the horse back riding trip when Mom got blisters on her hand from hanging on so tight. Harold may be gone from this place but his memories will last forever. I just received the sad news about Harold's passing this morning. Reading the guestbook entries brought back so many great memories of my own, when the Ebelings would take our summer roadtrip vacation and stay with the Bretschneiders (and grandpa) and have such adventures: the lake and beach (and sunburns!), the boat rides, the fountains show, the train whistle, the homemade donuts, and especially just the family time, watching my mom interacting with her favorite cousin and our dads enjoying time together. Harold was on my route for Wednesday delivery of Meals on Wheels. I loved visiting with him. He always had a cookie or treat for me. We were able to sit and talk for a while. He shared his poetry and writing with me as well as stories of his life and family. He was a wonderful person; I looked forward to each Wednesday. Hello Bretschneider family, I am so sorry for the loss of Harold, I thought I would share some corky little things I remember from him. Memories from their home on the river during family get togethers are of course the fishing we did! He was always so patient with us kids, with our fish questions, and I really remember digging big worms out of their big compost box on the side of their garage!I remember playing badmitten with Clayton and Adam, All the mosquitos around the water, and all of the Readers Digest magazines he had! I guess as kids we remember the funniest little things that stand out! But most of all, Harold and Bernice always treated us like their extended grandchildren, they were always a kind pressence at all of the gatherings, and always took time to take part in our lives. We love you all and will pray for you during your time of loss.

Dear Family,
We will always remember the wonderful summer camping vacations in Michigan when we lived in Indiana and our children were small. Uncle Harold and Aunt Bernice always made sure we had at least one good meal complete with sweet corn and blueberries! They would visit us at the campsite bringing warm jackets when the weather turned cool, or offering a dry place to sleep when we got rained out. One summer when the campground was full we pitched our tent in their backyard, and Uncle Harold took the kids out on the river in his boat. When Dave and I first got married, one of the first vacations we took was to visit his Aunt and Uncle in Michigan. The Bretschneiders welcomed me and made me feel like one of the family. I regret that we were unable to attend the memorial service. Uncle Harold was such a blessing to everyone who knew him.
