Alan Roy Garter's Obituary
Alan Roy Garter, age 69, passed away unexpectedly on August 28, 2025, in Spring Lake, Michigan. Al was born to Taylor and Beverly Garter on October 4, 1955, in Grand Haven, Michigan. Al graduated from Spring Lake High School in 1974 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University. On June 29, 1984, Al married Patti (Parnell) in Grand Haven, Michigan. Al most recently worked as a salesman for Northland Farms.
Al was a Spring Lake Lakers super fan, passionately supporting his alma mater whenever he had the opportunity. Volleyball was Al’s passion. He enjoyed both playing and coaching the sport, and he was a formative presence for many of the players he coached throughout the years at Spring Lake High School, Muskegon Community College, and Inside Out Club Volleyball. Al was excellent at bringing out the best in the teams he coached and helping his players reach their potential. When he wasn’t courtside, Al enjoyed the time he spent on the water, whether that be boating on Big Bass Lake or lounging on the beach during a tropical getaway.
Al will be remembered by his friends, family, players, and community as a likeable and kind soul with abundant wisdom to share. Al is survived by his wife, Patricia Garter; sisters, Hazel (John) Raddatz and Marjorie Scoon; and many nieces and nephews. Al is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mary Stoken; and his brother-in-law, David Scoon.
Memorial contributions in Al’s memory may be made to Spring Lake High School Volleyball. Per Al’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned at this time. Arrangements have been entrusted to The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey St, Norton Shores, MI 49444. Share memories with the family at https://sytsemafh.com.
