Mr. Alan C. Swanson's Obituary
On Saturday, July 28th, 2018, Lt. Colonel Alan C Swanson, USAF Retired, heard the reassuring voice in the tower say, “Clear Ahead, Commander.” The squadron surrounding him heard his firm response, “Wheels UP!” and watched him depart, solo, on the last leg of his earthly journey - a perfect “take-off” toward his next critical assignment. Alan was born in Chicago, in 1937, to Lillian and Clarence Swanson. He attended the University of Illinois, receiving a BS in Geology. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Air Force, served honorably for 25 years, and retired in 1983 as a Lieutenant Colonel - a Command Pilot with over 7500 flying hours, including 500 hours of combat time. His Air Force career included time in Troop Carrier, Flight Test, and Special Operations. He was awarded numerous medals to include 5 air medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After retirement from the Air Force, he worked as Marketing Director (Middle East and SW Asia) for Recon Optical; and as Marketing Manager, Smiths Industries Military Flight Management Systems. He was a Master Mason, Saladin Shriner, Court 11 Jester; and was a member of the VFW, American Legion, The Vikings, The Order of Daedalians, Air Force Association, and the Elks. Alan enjoyed life to its fullest. He loved to play golf, to sail Lake Michigan and the Caribbean, downhill and cross-country skiing, travel, and wintering in California. He readily shared his firm handshake, a seriously warm hug, and an engaging smile. He is survived by his loving wife, children and step-children: Judy (Longcore) Swanson; Marc (Dessie) Swanson, Linda (Vince) Janenka, Laura (Dave Lynch) Purcell, and William (Jennine) Purcell III; his adored grandchildren Sarah Swanson, Matthew Janenka, Ian Purcell and Amelia Purcell; his sister, Sally (Jim) Byrne, and brother-in-law Skip (Carol) Longcore. A casual memorial gathering will be held from 10-11:30 AM, to include Military Honors at 11 AM on Monday, August 13 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., 231-798-1100. A luncheon will follow at noon at The Viking’s Lodge in Muskegon. In lieu of flowers, Alan has suggested memorial contributions to Faith Hospice and Benjamin’s Hope.
