Albert H. "Obbie" Flickema's Obituary
Mr. Albert H. “Obbie” Flickema, age 92, died late Wednesday evening, December 11, 2013, at his home. He was born May 23, 1921 in Muskegon to William J. and Antoinette W. (Zahn) Flickema; and had been a life resident of the Lakeside area. He was a 1940 graduate of Muskegon High School. On October 2, 1942, at the age of 20, Albert joined the U.S Army. He was part of the Normandy invasion, landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1945. He received his 2nd Lieutenant commission while studying at the Napoleon Castle, in France. “Obbie” enjoyed sharing his War stories and had been a speaker at the WWII lecture series given at the USS Silversides Museum. Albert had been a 41 year employee of Anaconda Wire and Cable prior to his retirement. He was a wonderful family man, enjoyed golf and fishing with his wife, the former Norene Clawson, whom he married February 6, 1942; and with whom he celebrated 71 years of marriage. SURVIVORS include his wife, Norene; 2 daughters, Marjorie (Clifford) Lund and Susan (Roger)Carlson, both of Muskegon; 4 grandchildren, Gina (Chris) Reynolds of Niles, MI, Shelley (Brad) Kurth of Spring Lake, Chris (Becky) Lund of Norton Shores and Kim (Aaron) Hennesey of Grand Rapids; 10 great-grandchildren and 3 sisters, Alberta Goldsborough of Muskegon, Annjean Yandian of Detroit and Karolyn (Ken) Rollenhagen of North Muskegon and by his sister-in-law, Patricia (Carl) Lipton. “Obbie” was and remains a favorite uncle to several nieces and nephews. He was affiliated with Lakeside Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion Post #9. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Monday, December 16, 2013 at Forest Park Covenant Church (3815 Henry St., Norton Shores, MI 49441) with his granddaughter, Pastor Shelley Kurth officiating. VISITATION with Albert’s family will be one-hour prior to the service at church. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS to the USS Silversides Submarine Museum or Center Lake Bible Camp will be appreciated.
