Albert M. Hekkema's Obituary
Mr. Albert Menno Hekkema, age 87, passed away peacefully in his home Monday, March 13, 2017. Al was born May 18, 1929 to Minte and Clara (Polet) Hekkema in Muskegon. On December 5, 1953, he married his beloved Marie Doud and she survives him along with his son, Mike (Jen) Hekkema, and grandson, Devin (Allyson) Hekkema; his daughter, Nan Hekkema, and grandkids, Joshua Flickema, Kara (Tony) Cunningham, Allison (Chris) Eckert; great-grandchildren, Parker and Porter Cunningham; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Hekkema; sister, Jennie Pickard; and niece, Sharie Hekkema. Al served in the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart. He spent his career in celery farming, construction, and had owned Mike’s Kro restaurant with his son. Al enjoyed many years with the Muskegon Country Antique Auto Club, touring and in parades with their ’37 Packard and ‘60’s Chevy convertible. He and Marie devoted a lot of time to volunteering for the Disabled American Veterans. There will be no services per Al’s request.
