Albert O. Schmidt's Obituary
Albert O. Schmidt, born on April 8, 1919, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital on June 21, 2017 at the age of 98. Al, the son of Oscar and Alberta (Radeake) Schmidt, was born in Grand Rapids, but lived most of his life in Muskegon. He was a graduate of Muskegon High School and became a skilled tool and die maker, working at Economy Tool and Machine for many years until his retirement. Al served his country during WWII as a Drill Sergeant in the United States Army, stationed in Arkansas and Texas. On September 28, 1940, Al married Grace Knudson; they had three children, Patricia, Judy and Jim. Al lived a very long and active life. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, an avid bowler, square and round dancer, and traveler, spending many winters in Florida. He was also a skilled builder and woodworker, building his homes as well as his cottage and two other houses. After retiring, he continued dancing and pursued golf, which he played into his nineties. Later in life, Al could be found at Tanglewood Senior Center and Norton Shores library playing cribbage and dominoes twice a week. He was a “regular” at Russ’ restaurant on Henry Street. Al was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace, of 56 years; dear friend, Susan Bekkering; brother, Hubert Schmidt; and son, Albert James Schmidt. He will be missed by his daughters, Patricia (Richard) Verbrugge, Judy (Rahmat Aryaeinejad) Schmidt; grandchildren, Sara Pearson, Richard (Molly) Verbrugge, Anna (Sterling) Averett, Roya Aryaeinejad, Andrew Schmidt, and Kateira Aryaeinejad; great-grandchildren, Hannah Pearson, Sophia Verbrugge, Arianna Earley, Noah Averett, and Violet Averett. A MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will take place on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at 11:00 AM at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church (2929 McCracken St.) with Rev. Fr. Charles Hall presiding. VISITATION with the family will take place an hour prior to services at church. Burial will take place in Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
