Mr. Albert Frank Zahrt's Obituary
Mr. Albert F. Zahrt, age 91, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2015 in Muskegon. Al was born March 12, 1924 to William and Ethel (Gates) Zahrt in Muskegon. On July 11, 1951 he married the former Mary Alice Mathews. He left school in tenth grade to serve his country in the US Army during WWII. He went on to graduate from Mona Shores High School at the age of 73. After returning from the war, Al worked as a mechanic for Matson Oldsmobile Cadillac. Al then owned and operated Mozart Chevrolet from 1957 to 1970. He returned to Matson Olds Cadillac in 1970, retiring in 1995. He had been a member of Laketon Bethel Church, serving as an elder and deacon. He then became a member of Unity Reformed Church where he and Mary were members of the XYZ group (Extra Years of Zest). He was a member of VFW Post 446, and the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Al’s passion was helping to restore old cars, as well as pedal cars for the grandchildren. He enjoyed watching sports, NASCAR events and, most importantly, spending time with his family. He dearly loved his wife, children, brothers, sisters and all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. SURVIVING Al is his wife of 64 years, Mary Alice; his children, Kathleen A. (Doug) Buter of Saginaw, Rebecca S. (Wayne) DeLong of Fairfield, OH, William A. (Polly) Zahrt of Muskegon and Thomas C. (Dawn) Zahrt of Menomonee Falls, WI; grandchildren, Andrea, Emily, Barry, Jennifer, Katherine “Katie”, Jannell, Rusty, Janine, Noah and Lauren; great-grandchildren, Jaxson, Baxter, Riley, Tucker, Caitlin, Sawyer, and Brooklyn; his brothers, Donald, Daniel (Nancy) and James (Sandy) Zahrt; sisters, Jean (Jack) Moore and Jane Peterson; and many nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and Harold; sisters, Ida and Bernice. SERVICES will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Unity Reformed Church (1521 Porter Rd.) with Rev. Kyle DeYoung officiating, and Full Military Rites under the auspices of VFW Muskegon County Council. VISITATION will be one hour prior to his service. Burial will be in Laketon Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired or the American Heart Association.
