Albert M. Thomten's Obituary
Albert Mancell Thomten, age 85, passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2008 in Grand Rapids. He was born October 8, 1923 to Karen Halvorsen (of Norway), and Albert Thomten (of Sweden) in Evanston, IL, and moved to the Muskegon area in 1997. Al was a light weight boxer, loved playing golf, cars, and being outdoors. He was a rifleman in the Army, and toured six European countries: Czechoslovakia, England, France, Germany, Holland, and Belgium. Albert received a purple heart and a bronze star for saving a fellow soldier’s life. He was a United States Postal Carrier in Winnetka, IL and also in South Pasadena, CA for a total of 35 years, retiring in 1984. Albert is fondly remembered by many people on his mail routes. In 1954, on his birthday, he married Charlotte A. Kalbfleish. They enjoyed travelling the United States and being together. In 2002, after 47 years of marriage, Charlotte passed away. SURVIVORS include his loving partner, Karen Stone; her daughters, Holly and Julie, and her grandson, Robert. Also surviving is Charlotte’s sister, Beverly Zeller and her daughter Cindy; several brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews. SERVICES will be 3PM Monday, December 15, 2008 at The Sytsema Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Ave.(231) 726-5210 with Pastor John H. Brown officiating. VISITATION will be 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Norton Cemetery. Contributions in Mr. Thomten’s memory may be made to the Michigan Veteran’s Home, 3000 Monroe NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505.
