Alexander "Sandy" Torrance's Obituary
Mr. Alexander “Sandy” Torrance, age 96, of Spring Lake passed away Friday, March 24, 2017 at the American House. He was born February 24, 1921 in Belfast, Northern Ireland to Robert and Charlotte (Robinson) Torrance and moved to the United States in 1952. On December 21, 1943, he married Mary Heggarty Smyth and she preceded him in death on March 27, 2008.
Sandy was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Croswell, MI and a member of Spring Lake Presbyterian Church. He was a cabinet maker for the Harland and Wolff ship yard while living in Belfast and later made wooden patterns for the automotive industry. Besides his love of woodworking, he also enjoyed golfing, playing the organ and singing in the church choir.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marion and Larry Fitch of Grand Haven; three grandchildren: Steve (Renee) Fitch, Andrew Fitch, Heather (Rob) Miller; four great-grandchildren: Keely and Ashlyn Fitch and Meara and Aidan Miller; sisters-in-law, Anne Glenfield, and Rosetta Torrance; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the United Methodist Church of the Dunes. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church.
