Alice Shumake's Obituary
Mrs. Alice Shumake, age 90, of Spring Lake passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at American House in Spring Lake. She was born March 1, 1932 in Spring Lake to George and Gladys (VieBrock) Chittenden. On November 21, 1970 she married the love of her life Boyd Shumake in Grand Haven. They enjoyed 29 years together and one of their favorite pastimes was camping in their motor home with friends. Boyd preceded her in death on December 31, 1999.
Alice was a member of Nortonville Gospel Chapel and cherished her time with Boyd and family and friends. She enjoyed word puzzles, reading book and being outdoors. After 46 years of working at Eagle Ottawa she retired in 1996.
Alice is survived by her step daughter, Deborah (Al) Emory; step-daughter-in-law, Netta Shumake; four grandchildren: William (Theresa) Emory, Eric (Tina) Emory, Scott (Krista) Shumake, and Michelle Herreman; dear friend, Diane Nienhouse, “blessed neighbors” Kevin and Jeri Hudson, and a very dear young man Fred Hudson. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Roy Chittenden, Leon (Mary) Chittenden, and Dale (Pat) Chittenden; sisters, Evelyn Harjer, Ruth Merz and Lois Spencer; step-son, Barry Shumake.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at Nortonville Gospel Chapel. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at church. Interment will take place in Spring Lake Township Cemetery. Memorial contribution in memory of Alice may be given to Nortonville Gospel Chapel or Habitat for Humanity.
