Dear Ann and family,

We were in California when we read the news of Al's passing on-line. Charlene and I always liked Al. How could one not like a man with that always present impish smile? I certainly enjoyed singing in the men's quartet with him over the years. I'm sure he enjoyed singing in the quartet too.

Now he is singing in heaven in the presence of the angels and all his other friends who went before him.

Please accept our deepest sympathies and know that we are keeping your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Mr. VanderPloeg hired me as a secretary in his firm in Whitehall. It was my first "real" job after graduating from Muskegon Business College. Although I didn't work for him very long, I remember that he was a very pleasant man and treated me with kindness. My sympathy to his family and may he rest in peace.

Not only did I have tremendous respect for Al's ability as an attorney, I was equally impressed by his skills at his favorite avocation- fishing. The biggest fish I have ever caught was on Al's boat in Lake Michigan. Of course, I was reminded by Al that my fish was no bigger than a guppy compared to the ones he caught in Florida.
