Alphonsas M. "Al" Savickas' Obituary
Mr. Alphonsas M. “Al” Savickas, age 89, passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Poppen Residence. He was born February 14, 1921 in Lexington, West Virginia to John and Josephine (Zutantaite) Savickas, Sr., and lived most of his life in the Muskegon area. Al was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a mechanic in the Air Corp during WWII. On June 1, 1946, he married the former Rose Dorner in Muskegon and she preceded him in death on October 23, 2007 after 61 years of marriage. Al worked 38 years in the Plumbing & Heating Department of Sears, Roebuck & Co. retiring in 1984. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Catholic War Veterans, and the Muskegon Heights Eagles. SURVIVORS include his 3 children, James (Marcia) Savickas of Sylania, OH, Michael (RoseAnn) Savickas of Novi, MI, Mary Jo (Jack) Grevel of Muskegon; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, John (Alice) Savickas, Jr. of Muskegon; 1 sister, Josephine (Howard) Youngstrom of Muskegon; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Bennie and Vincent, and 3 sisters, Christine, Gerrie, and Sally. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated 11:00 AM Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Thomas J. Brown as celebrant. INTERMENT will follow at St. Marys Cemetery with Military Honors offered by the Muskegon County Council of Veterans. VISITATION will be held 5-8 PM Friday at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey Street (231) 798-100. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM Friday evening. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the Mass, 10-11 AM Saturday in the Victor Miller Room at Sacred Heart. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, please consider donations to Harbor Hospice.
