My deepest sympathy to the family of Mrs. Nixon. I have always thought of Mrs. Nixon as perhaps the finest teacher I had. I have found memories of being in her 5th grade class at Bunker in 1970/71. She was warm yet stern - making sure we were properly taught, even if that meant making us use both the "old math" books and the "new math" books! To this day, I'm not sure whether it was her reading aloud of Johnny Tremain or having us say the Pledge of Allegiance everyday, but she instilled in us a sense of patriotism and love of country despite the political turmoil of those days. One vivid memory is of the day a soldier knocked on the door to say hello to Mrs. Nixon. I assume he was a former student. That he came to see her, and the hug she gave him, spoke volumes of how much she touched the lives of her students. In later years I was pleased to encounter Mrs. Nixon at the Art Fair and to hear of my parents chatting with her at the Frauenthal. She gave so much to others that it makes me glad that she lived such a full and rewarding life.##imported-begin##David Schrumpf##imported-end##
Our heartfelt condolences to the Nixon family, our prayers are with you.
We also would like to celebrate Marie's life. We are so glad that Annika knew "Great Grandma" Marie and had the opportunity to spend time with her.
Regardless of her age, Marie continued to shine with so many admirable qualities that have served as an example to us all...we feel grateful that our lives have been touched by such a remarkable and accomplished individual.##imported-begin##Trevor, Linda and Annika Hill##imported-end##
Dear Peggy and Stuart,
It has been such a pleasure to have
known your mom these past 28 years.
Marie was one of the first volunteers I met when I began my work with the American Red Cross. She was chairman of a very large unit of volunteers who worked on the blood program. Marie's volunteers were the most loyal and cohesive group ever and I think their commitment to the job was partly because of their respect and commitment to Marie. I remember one of our volunteers who was in a wheelchair coming in to work during one of the worst winter snow storms ever. When I asked him why he ventured out during such horrible weather, he responded "I just couldn't let Marie down"...(Marie first and then the Red Cross!)
Another big impact Marie had was on my own life. As the new "kid" at the Red Cross back in 1982, some of the older volunteers were reluctant to accept the change. But Marie fully embraced it and took me under her wing, helping me to establish credibility and rapport with our volunteers.
And from this relationship, sprung a friendship that grew over the years. I came to know an educated, interesting, caring, and a very special person. So many stories to tell back and forth and so much to learn.
So, I will miss Marie very much. She has made a profound impact in my own life and a lasting impact on the American Red Cross and our community.
With love and my deepest sympathy,

My deepest sympathy to the family. I didn't know Marie very long, but cared for her a short time at Dayspring Assisted Living and tried to be supportive to family members that were there. My husband and his siblings were students of Mrs. Nixon at Bunker school and have fond memories of being in her class. May God be with you.##imported-begin##Diana Burr##imported-end##
To the Nixon Family,
Noting Mrs. Nixon's passing, good memories came back to me. I am now 60 years old and retired from a wonderful career in the health care field. Mrs. Nixon was my fourth grade teacher at Moon School in Muskegon. She was a wonderful teacher and part of a group at Moon School who sent many of us on to great careers and lives. I grew up in the Mission Covenant Church ( now Forest Park) and do not remember her going there in my younger years but was delighted to note that she became a congregant. Her obituary printed in the Muskegon Chronicle highlighted a varied and very interesting life.I hads no idea that she was still with us. How wonderful to have lived 95 years.May our God be with you as you celebrate her life and grieve her loss. Please count me as one of, I'm sure many, who are better people today because of her guidance and instruction. Sincerely, Donald P. Potter##imported-begin##Donald Potter##imported-end##
Dearest Stuart & Marion, Peggy & Steve; Our fondest memories of Aunt Marie are of Nixon Family gatherings and the many times we visited her in Muskegon. Jill was 7 months old and on her first trip to Michigan when we introduced her to her Great Grand-Aunt. The first thing Jill saw was this beautiful piano in Aunt Marie's living room. Aunt Marie really had a way with kids. She sat down at the piano and began softly playing a lullaby for Jill. Then she asked if Jill would like to sit with her so that they could play the piano together. What a lovely moment! We barely had time to pull out the camera! Aunt Marie started to teach Baby Jill about the piano keys and the music they make when played together. I can still hear Aunt Marie telling her, "...and we must never forget about the black keys..." I don't know who had more fun, Jill or Aunt Marie! Jill had her first piano lesson! It is a memory we will always cherish! During each subsequent visit, Aunt Marie would always ask Jill, "Are you ready for your next piano lesson?" And the two of them would sit together at the keys, composing their own duet.
We celebrate Aunt Marie's life and feel blessed that she was a part of ours. With Love - Don, Leslie & Jill##imported-begin##Don, Leslie & Jillian Nixon##imported-end##
