Anthony "Tony" Maas' Obituary
Anthony “Tony” Sebastianus Maas, age 86, went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at a local care facilty. He was born October 6, 1930, in Hillegom, Netherlands, to William A. and Alida (Straathof) Maas, and he married Irene Lucille Vollmer on February 14, 1953, in Holland, Michigan.
Tony served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He worked at Challenge Machinery as Shipping and Packing clerk, and owned and operated Tony and Irene’s Christmas Tree Farm with his wife. After “retiring”, Tony worked at Nelis’ Dutch Village in Holland as a wooden shoe carver and demonstrator, and was in many parades with the Dutch street organ. Tony was a propagator of many plants, from conifer to perrenials. His other interests were fishing, mushroom hunting, camping, traveling, biking, and watching the Detroit Tigers. Tony was a member of St. Patrick-St. Anthony Catholic Church where he served as Eucharistic minister, Lector, and was a very active member in the Cursillo movement since 1972. He also served on the Board of Recreation for 26 years.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Irene Maas of Grand Haven; and two daughters, Yvonne (David) Boon and Anita Maas of Grand Haven; five grandchildren: Cecilia Potts, Arie (Caitlin) Boon, Anthony (Liz Burke) Boon, Alida (Andrew) Semrenic, and Timothy (Rachel) Andrews; two great-grandchildren, Tristan Andrews and Thomas Boon. He was preceded in death by his five brothers: Karel VanBourgondian, Cornelius “Kees” VanBourgondian, Jan Maas, William Maas, and Hans Maas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 2016, at St. Patrick- St. Anthony Catholic Church in Grand Haven with Rev. Fr. Charles Schwartz presiding. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post # 28 Honor Guard. Friends may meet the family 5-8 p.m. Friday, October 28, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lakeshore Cemetery.
