Anton "Tony" Trojnar's Obituary
Anton “Tony” Trojnar, age 92, passed away Tuesday morning, January 24, 2012. He was born June 9, 1919 in Muskegon Heights, MI to Lewis and Mary (Mazurek) Trojnar. Mr. Trojnar was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp (CC Camp) for one year. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in the spring of 1940 and served on the heavy cruiser, the USS Northamton, which was sunk in a night battle over the Guadalcanal South Pacific. After a thirty day leave, he reported aboard the USS Iowa in Brooklyn, NY after conducting shakedown training in the Chesapeake Bay and along the coast. The USS Iowa then departed for the North Atlantic in what was called the Tirpitz Watch (German Battleship). Late in the fall, the USS Iowa returned to Norfolk, VA, where a short time later President Roosevelt and his full military staff boarded for his conference with Josef Stalin and Winston Churchill in Teheran, Iran. After returning to Norfolk, the USS Iowa along with the battleship New Jersey, departed for the Pacific where they did their share. Tony remained on the USS Iowa till the end of his six year enlistment, the spring of 1946. After returning to civilian life, he worked for Teledyne Continental Motors for 32 ½ years. After retiring, he moved to Grand Haven. He was a member of the Grand Haven Eagles and the Grand Haven American Legion. He spent his retirement years traveling to his trailer on 40 acres by the Pere Marquette River, near Walhalla, MI. On July 29, 1983 he married Ann M. Nykamp Winnerink in Holland, MI and she preceded him in death on July 7, 2007. SURVIVORS include two sisters, Celia Halasinski, Angie Ayers both of Muskegon; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Edward Trojnar and a sister, Eleanor Brabb. In accordance with Tony’s wishes, there will be no services. Burial will take place in Mona View Cemetery.
