Archie E. Pelton's Obituary
Archie Edward Pelton, age 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 12, 2012, at Heartwood Lodge in Spring Lake. He was born November 13, 1922, in Robinson Township to Cort Pelton and Antonettie (Nettie) Freh Pelton.
As a teenager he worked at a CCC Camp in Kalkaska and at Kinkema's Funeral Home while going to Grand Haven High School. Later he worked at Kinkema's Furniture Store. Archie married Celia Rose Veeneman at her parents' home in Coopersville on July 31, 1942. She died in 2008. Archie served as an Army Medical Aidman in World War II. He served in hospitals and on a hospital ship taking care of the wounded in Australia and near Naples, Italy, and off-shore for the Invasion of Southern France. The ship traveled back and forth from Europe to Africa and also to America with hundreds of wounded. After serving his country he went to carpet installation school and worked for over fifty years doing this and taught over ten men the trade through the years. Archie enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing and playing cards. He was well-known for his joking and teasing of everyone. He was proud to receive his high school diploma while in his seventies. Most of all, he loved being with his family and friends. Archie was a member of Second Reformed Church here in town. Surviving him are two daughters, Judy (Mahlon) Scherf, and Bonnie (Butch) Laarman of this city; nineteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. He had a special nephew, Roger Corwin, and his family of Grand Rapids. Roger was like a son to him always. He is also survived by one sister, Lucille (Frank) Parcheta, of Spring Lake, sister-in-law, Nelma Pelton, of Stuttgart, Arkansas, sister-in-law Anna Pelton of Grand Haven, sister-in-law, Gertrude Veeneman of Grand Rapids, sister-in-law Nellie Walt and brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Gloria Veeneman of Coopersville and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Cort, John and Jim, and a sister, Helen. A Memorial Service for Archie will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Second Reformed Church in Grand Haven with Rev. Mike VanKampen officiating. Interment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community or Love INC in Grand Haven in his memory.
