Arlan "Arlie" E. Smock's Obituary
Arlan E. “Arlie” Smock, age 83 of Muskegon, went to be with his Lord on Saturday May 5, 2018 due to complications from pneumonia and lung cancer. Arlie was born on January 12, 1935 to Archie and Jennie Smock in Sears, Michigan. He was the youngest of 13 children and grew up on the family farm in Sears until high school graduation when he left to enlist in the Army. Arlie served in Japan right after the end of the Korean War. Upon returning to the States, he became a structural ironworker as a member of union Local 340 (now Local 25), which Arlie excelled for the next 42 years. In 1960, he married Patricia (Trombley) Smock and was married until 2000. Arlie is survived by two children, Julie Smock of Muskegon and Tim (Faith) Smock of Ada, along with grandsons, Braden and Dylan. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Maddern of Reed City, MI. Arlie enjoyed playing golf, most of it at Bent Pine CC in Muskegon. In the 1970’s and 1980’s he was a member at the Muskegon Elks Country Club (now Oakridge). In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing fast pitch softball. He was a pitcher and by all accounts was one the best in the Muskegon area in the 1960’s. Arlie also was a Little League baseball coach in Roosevelt Park. He has been a member of the Mona Lake Boat Club since 1982. Later in life, Arlie really enjoyed himself by singing with the barber shoppers of the Muskegon Shoreline Chorus. A Celebration of Life will be held 3:00 PM, Saturday, June 30 at Bent Pine Golf Course (2480 Duck Lake Rd Whitehall, MI 49461). Share memories with the family online at www.sytsemafh.com. Arrangements by The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. (231) 798-1100.
