Art was one of six children born to Foster and Irene Reeg in Indiana and raised in Sturgis, MI. Art received high school varsity letters in football, wrestling and baseball. He trained to be a pilot, but WWII fortunately ended before he flew any missions. Art graduated from Michigan State University earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He specialized in machine design and was proud of his profession. He spent the majority of his career at Kaydon Corporation.
Art and wife Joan Mierle, have been married nearly 65 years and raised four children. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church, had strong faith and work ethic. He had a welcoming charm, great sense of humor, and always had stories to tell. Family, friends and neighbors were always welcomed at his table.
Art and Joan were avid gardeners and cultivated beautiful gardens full of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Family and friends enjoyed countless social gatherings around the pool. Grandchildren especially loved visiting Papa Art’s fishpond, swing, picking carrots from the garden (cleaning them in the pool), and eating hotdogs that he cooked over the fire pit after an afternoon of swimming. Many alumni of Ross Park Elementary School will remember Art’s backyard maple syrup making demonstrations. The school children especially enjoyed getting to taste the syrup on Joan’s mini pancakes.
Art kept up his athletic abilities - played on golf and bowling leagues, continued downhill skiing into his 80’s and cross-country skiing into 90’s.
Art was a Boy Scout and a Boy Scout leader, a member of Torch Club, board member of the Hume Home, and a member of Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed collecting coins and slide rules, and he always looked forward to playing cards with his poker group.
He enjoyed living life to the fullest while enjoying life’s simple pleasures. He lived a very long full life! His family, friends and neighbors will miss him.
