Barbara A. Stubbart's Obituary
Barbara A. Stubbart, age 92, of Muskegon, entered into the presence of her Lord on Sunday morning, August 7, 2016. Barbara was born to the late Minnesota High School Basketball Coach Hall of Famer Harvey Roels and late Gladys (Brugger) Roels of Chisholm, MN. During High School, Barbara competed as Swim Team Captain at the MN State Tournament, played tennis for her HS, and loved playing baseball. She received her degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Kansas. By age 21, she was practicing in Columbia, SC, where she met her future husband, James Stubbart. After their marriage, they lived in Charleston, SC; Orlando, FL; and Ann Arbor, MI, while James finished his education and residency in Dermatology. Barbara and Dr. Stubbart settled in Muskegon where he practiced medicine and they raised their family. Both of them enjoyed playing golf and skiing, and Barbara resumed playing tennis. Barbara returned to physical therapy work after her children were grown and spent seven years as a Physical Therapist at Mercy Hospital. The Central United Methodist Church, which she considered her second family, kept her active in leadership roles, various groups and ministries. She was also a faithful board member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization. Barbara volunteered with charitable organizations to include the hospital gift shop and the Nearly New Shop. For over 50 years, she donated her time to the Greater Muskegon Service League. Additionally, she was a long-time member with the Muskegon County Medical Society Auxiliary. Barbara loved entertaining friends and family in her home, where she also enjoyed gardening into her nineties and feeding the squirrels and birds. She was preceded in death by her husband and survived by her four devoted children: Kathryn Jahr, John (Fern) Stubbart, Lane (Michael) Walker, and James Randall (Kim) Stubbart; her nine grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Friday, August 12, 2016 at Central United Methodist Church, downtown Muskegon, with Rev. Mark Miller officiating. VISITATION with the family will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Central United Methodist Church Music Program.
