Barbara Sweeney Pomp's Obituary
Barbara Sweeney Pomp, age 94, gracefully passed away in her home Tuesday, May 10, 2011. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 16, 1916, to Paul F. Sweeney and Amelia Bahl Sweeney, and graduated from Our Lady of Angels High School in Chicago. Barbara attended Purdue University and joined the secretarial work force in Chicago until her marriage to C. Philip Pomp on February 12, 1944. After they moved to Elgin, Illinois, Barbara was active in the Cosmopolitan Club, serving as President, and was an integral part of the Song of Hiawatha staff prior to moving to Spring Lake, Michigan in 1983.
Barbara’s hobbies and interests included golf, sewing, quilting, knitting, antiquing, miniatures and beaded Christmas trees. She was the consummate mother who made herself available as driver, chaperone and group leader, always in the positive spirit of helping others. Her sense of adventure, love of life and friendly smile were with her until the end.
She is survived by her daughter, Katherine (Dr. JB) Gilleland; five grandchildren: Camber White, Jordon Gilleland, Jeffrey Gilleland, Joy Gilleland and Dr. Diana (Eric) Bitner; and five great-grandchildren: Katelyn DeIulius, Sydney White, Megan Bitner, Pixie Bitner, and Owen Bitner, all of Grand Haven, MI. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, C. Philip Pomp, and her brother, Paul C. Sweeney.
Friends are invited to meet the family on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 3:00 PM at the VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. The Funeral Service will follow at 4:00 PM. Interment will be in Elgin, Illinois. Please sign the family’s online guest book at www.vbkfuneralhome.com.
