Barry D. Sullivan's Obituary
Barry Sullivan, born on April 17, 1946, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on February 7, 2024.
Barry retired from Chicago Bridge & Iron as a safety supervisor. Barry’s time with CBI took him around the country and the world. His letters home revealed a gift for writing and a love of different cultures and people. His expansive vocabulary and competitive spirit made him a worthy challenger in Words with Friends which became an important point of connection these past few years. Barry’s love of sports developed in his playing days as a youth and only grew as he watched his children and grandchildren compete. Watching his grandchildren perform on stage, dance, sing and play their instruments provided enjoyment and filled him with a sense of pride. Gathering around food, including breakfast with the Boys, was always a priority. He and Wendy generously hosted many friends and family at their house on Wolf Lake throughout the years. Among other qualities, Barry will be remembered for his generosity, kindness, neighborliness and his ability to make everyone feel valued.
Barry is survived by Wendy, his loving wife of 20 years, their combined five children and their families, Chris (Duane) Kelley, Jason Sullivan, Kenny (Lori) Whipple, Shelly (Terry) Rusco and Angie Whipple; 19 grandchildren, Jonah (Victoria), Ben (Maddie), Andrew, Eli, Myla, McKenna (Bryson), Macy, Monica, Mallori, Brittney (Corey), Derek (Carly), Dakota, Dylan, Jillian, Bodie, Ally (Ryan), Cayden, Trace and Reese; five great-grandchildren, Owen, Tripp, Jameson, Jax and Vada; sisters Gaylon VanHouten, Nancy Warmolts and Mary Lou Huffman; lifelong friend and mother of his children, Ruth Tobin, numerous nephews and nieces, neighbors and friends.
Barry was preceded in death by his step-son, Granville Taylor; brothers, Bill, Gene, Howard and Mickey; his parents, Glen and Dora; and brothers-in-law, Paul, Roger and Jay.
