Barry R. "Larry" Akerley's Obituary
Mr. Barry R. “Larry” Akerley, age 72, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2011 in Muskegon. He was born on July 30, 1938 to Raymond and Vera (Edwards) Akerley, and graduated from Muskegon High School. In 1965, he founded and was the owner of Akerley Trucking. He loved being involved with any new project in the Muskegon area, and was very interesting to talk with as he could tell you the history of Muskegon. Barry’s biggest passion was classic cars. He owned a ‘57 Chevy Convertible, ‘59 Edsel and two ‘68 Grand Prix Convertibles. He was a member of the Muskegon Country Antique Auto Club, and regularly went to car shows. Barry loved his grandchildren, Jeffrey Akerley II, Kimberlee Kirschner, and Kayla Kirschner; and is also survived by his daughter, Susan Akerley; and son, Jeff Akerley both of Muskegon; very close friends, Bill Nicholson, Lester Thomas, David Trute and cousins. Barry was preceded in death by his parents; and granddaughter, Kristi Kirschner. Barry had Parkinson’s for many years, but was a brave and strong fighter of the disease. The MEMORIAL SERVICE will be 3:30PM Saturday at The Walburn Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 1547 W. Sherman Blvd. 231-759-8565.
