Betty E. Johnson's Obituary
Betty E. Johnson, age 89, passed away on Sunday, October 7 at a local hospital. She was one of nine children of Emil and Marie Shaffer. Born in Ludington on January 1, she was the first baby born in Mason County in 1929. Her children grew up believing the New Years Eve fireworks and New Years Day parades were for her birthday – and still do and celebrate it accordingly. On November 15, 1947 Betty married the love of her life and soul mate Harvey Johnson, and together they had four lucky children. They were both charter members of Edgewood Lutheran Church in Fruitport where they were active in church operations and activities. Betty had many loves and interests. She loved dining with family and friends whether it was at home or out and about, and every Saturday was Clover Bar pizza followed by an evening of music and entertainment with family. Betty loved living in the area and her home, which she and her husband purchased over fifty years ago. She also loved traveling or just going, whether it was going across the country with family by plane, train or car, or simply going to one of her favorite life-long destinations Lake Michigan. Moonrises and sunsets were among her loves and every evening at sunset you would find her in Grand Haven with family and enjoying the serenity the Big Lake provides. But her greatest love of all was her love for her family. A love only equaled by the love her family felt for her. She is now in heaven with her loving husband. Betty will forever be remembered and missed by her 4 children: Wayne (Zenaida) Johnson, Michael Johnson, Patti (Robert) Johnson and Shelley (Dennis) Powell: 6 grandchildren, Kacie Watson, Shannon (Chris) Monday, Alissa Olsen, Becky Johnson, Joshua and Nathan Powell; 4 great grandchildren, Allison Jane and Emily Watson, Lucas and Lily Monday, and sister Sally (David) Sobolik. She is reunited in heaven with her husband Harvey who passed in 2011, both her parents, and all but one sibling. Memorials can be directed to Edgewood Lutheran Church in Fruitport. Burial will take place at Spring Lake Cemetery. Arrangements by, The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., 231-798-1100.
