Betty M. Johnston's Obituary
Mrs. Betty Mae Johnston, age 82, passed away Friday, July 5, 2024. She was born in Muskegon, Michigan on October 25, 1941, to Norman and Marvel (Hevel) Knobe. “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory” – Dr. Seuss. Betty would want to be remembered for a special moment she may have shared with those that knew and loved her, especially the moments spent at social gatherings, which both her and her husband, Doug, loved to attend. The bar was always open at their home for family members and friends to share time together. In addition, Doug and Betty spent countless years camping at the Elks Park, sharing a campfire, laughter, and just a few cocktails with many friends. They also never turned down an opportunity for a trip to a casino. Betty graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1960 and continued to get together with the “Heights Girls” quite regularly. Betty’s work life was perfectly suited to her social personality as well. As a receptionist at various places in Muskegon, including Muskegon Hardware and Matson’s Oldsmobile, Betty’s outgoing personality was a perfect fit. After Doug’s passing, Betty continued to enjoy special moments with neighbors after she moved to Stillwater Springs Condos where she became one of the Greeters, along with her dear friend Sandy, for new residents moving in. Another perfect fit for her! When Betty married Doug on February 5, 1966, she not only gained a husband, but also his two daughters, Debra Piasecki of Grand Haven and Connie (Robert) Smith of Fruitport who survive her along with four grandchildren, Carla (Travis) Koopman, Curt (Emily) Rouwhorst, Gregory (Courtney) Smith and Gary (Jorri) Smith; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Aubrey Rouwhorst, Niles Koopman, and Addilyn and Amelia Smith. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Doug; parents; son-in-law, Ronald Piasecki; and sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Norm Czerniak. If dementia has taught anything it is that we never know after a moment has passed that it may be the last memory we shared. Per Betty’s wishes, no services will be held. Her family would want you to cherish your memories of Betty. Missing someone is sadness wrapped in the blessing of having known them. Betty’s family would like to thank the staff and residents of Chestnut Fields for their kindness, support, professionalism, dedication and friendship during Betty’s final months. They maintained Betty’s quality of life and for that her family will be eternally grateful. Should anyone wish to make a donation in Betty’s honor, please make your check payable to Chestnut Fields, 5425 Chestnut Drive, Muskegon, MI 49444 to be used to enhance the social activities Chestnut Fields offers daily.
