Betty L. Rycenga's Obituary
Mrs. Betty L. Rycenga, age 80, of Grand Haven passed away suddenly Sunday, August 5, 2018. She was born December 20, 1937 in Allendale to Luis and LaVerne (Thurkettle) Nuland. On June 7, 1957 she married Herman Rycenga and he preceded her in death November 2, 2001.
Betty loved her family, she loved Saturday morning coffee, Christmas bingo, camping with all of them. She enjoyed gardening, bowling, and baking. Betty used her talents by playing music for local nursing homes. She volunteered her time and energy crocheting and making quilts for the VA Home in Grand Rapids, and baking pies for the VFW. Betty was a former member of Hope Reformed Church and stood by her faith in all that she did.
She is survived by three children: Lee (Janet) Rycenga, Lyle (Renee) Rycenga, and Susan (Jeff Hinkle) Tompkins all of Grand Haven; seven grandchildren: Tanya, and Todd Rycenga, Kylene (Ryan) Schipper, Jessica, and Benjamin Rycenga, Jennifer (Alex) Moore, and David Tompkins, Jr.; five great-grandchildren: Aiden and Adelynn Rycenga, Cecilia and Charlie Schipper, and Caleb Moore; four siblings: Edith (Roger) Rycenga, Mae (Alvin) Eaton, Ann (Louis) VanFarowe, John (Rosemary) Nuland; in-laws, Ron Higbee, and Elwood (Marge) Rycenga; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luis Nuland, and LaVerne (Clifford) Beukema, son-in-law, David Tompkins, Sr; sister-in-law, Lois Higbee.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Thursday, August 9, 2018 at The VanZantwick Chapel (620 Washington Ave.) with Rev. Tim Taylor officiating. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Wednesday, August 8, 2018 and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Historic Cemetery.
