Betty Elizabeth Yonkers' Obituary
Betty E. Yonkers, age 88, passed away July 6, 2017 in Muskegon. She was born October 4, 1928 in Muskegon Heights to George Harold and Lola (Ridgeway) Yonkers. She attended K-12 schools in Muskegon Heights, graduating in 1946. As she continued her education she received a Bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan College of Education (now W.M.U.) in 1950. She received her Master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1956. She continued to receive further graduate credits through grants from the National Science Foundation (post Sputnikers). Betty taught secondary mathematics in Niles, Michigan Community Schools from 1950 – 1986. Upon retirement she returned to her hometown area. When not attending summer school session to earn credits toward advanced degrees, Betty traveled extensively around the U.S.A. and Canada. One summer she spent a lengthy time in Europe with her sister Louise Yonkers and Aunt Dorothy Ridgeway. Betty is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Harold and Robert Yonkers. She is survived by her sister, Louise Yonkers; niece, Lynn (Steve) Brock; great nephew, Jason (Angie) Brock; great-great-nephew, Wyatt Brock and great-great-niece, Lily Brock. There will be no visitation or public services. Burial will be in the Yonkers family plot at Mona View Cemetery. Arrangements by The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., (231) 798-1100.
