Bob Cook, Sr.'s Obituary
Bob Cook, Sr. (Big Bob or Grandpa Bob) passed away peacefully on New Years Day with family by his side, just shy of his 80th birthday.
The youngest of nine children, Bob was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While attending Ottawa High School he met Ina Lytle, who would become the love of his life. Ina and Bob married in 1949, and together they raised three boys; Bob Jr., Rich and Ron.
While living in Grand Rapids Bob was a fireman at Engine House #8. He and Ina moved their young family to Spring Lake in the late 60’s, when he purchased Bilz Plumbing & Heating from Preston Bilz. He owned the business from 1966 until his retirement. Even in retirement, he often stopped by to see how things were going and helped out whenever he could.
In his younger years Bob’s hobbies included hunting with his beagles, bowling, golfing, socializing with friends, fishing and spending time with his boys. He was active in the Kiwanis Club, the Yacht Club and Spring Lake Country Club. As time went on, he and Ina enjoyed winters in Alabama and playing the occasional nickel slots. Later in life he had one hobby, which was his grandchildren. He would often tell them that they were what kept him going. From kindergarten programs to middle school and high school sports to graduations, Grandpa Bob was there rooting them on, their number one fan.
Bob lived a good, rich life. He set a great example for his children, with his kindness, good humor and generosity. If you knew Big Bob, you probably heard a story or two, for he was known to strike up a conversation with anyone who would listen. He was a familiar face in the Laker cheering section and brought smiles to those around him. He was a good man with a big personality.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ina; children, Bob and Donna, Rich and Barb, Ron and Peggy; and eight adoring grandchildren, Ryan, Kelly, Sean, Maggie, Annie, Cory, David and Abbey; also his brother Art.
A loving and loyal husband, father and grandfather; loyal fan of every Laker player and friend to every Laker Mom, he will be missed…
An open house to celebrate Bob’s life will be held Saturday, January 12th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Barber Street School in Spring Lake. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Harbor Hospice or the Charlie Bassett Legacy Fund. Share memories with the family at their online guest book at www.vbkfuneralhome.com.
