Bonnie Jean Vokits' Obituary
Bonnie Jean Vokits, age 77, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2024. She was born February 5, 1947, in Muskegon to Eugene and Arline (Kirby) Farr and had been a lifelong resident of the area. On November 25, 1967, she married Donald Vokits in Muskegon. Bonnie worked for over 18 years in Muskegon County as a social worker. She also worked in the private sector and for Muskegon Public Schools. Bonnie was an accomplished author and instrumental in starting the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program here in Muskegon and served as its Director. She was a member of Spring Lake Presbyterian Church in Spring Lake. She was active with the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, and the National Society of Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, Muskegon Genealogical Society, the Muskegon Boys and Girls Club, and many other church and social groups.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Donald Vokits; five children: Kim (Paul) Goosen, Dawn Vokits-Moe (Jeremy Moe), Tracy (Chris) VanderVelde, Wendy (Steve) Mekkes, and Lisa Holderman (Scott Anderson); 13 grandchildren: Rory, Mitchell (Sarah), Tyler, Sean, Amber, Jayne, Jenna, Emma, Luke, Esther, Isabel, Gabrielle, and Gracie; great-grandson, Mason; sister, Deanna (John) Moseley; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dave Farr; sister, Janet Bogue; and granddaughter, Emily Jayne VanderVelde.
Bonnie's body has been donated for dementia research. A celebration of Bonnie’s life will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Spring Lake Presbyterian Church. Visitation with the family will be from 6-8 PM on Friday, August 2, 2024 at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444 (231) 798-1100.
