Bruce B. Courim's Obituary
Bruce B. Courim, age 76, passed away unexpectedly early Friday August 28, 2020. He was born on March 12, 1944 to Guy and Ann (Thomas) Courim in Muskegon, MI where he has lived most of his life. He was a veteran serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He attended Ferris State University where he received not only his bachelor’s degree in mathematics, but also met the love of his life on a blind date! He continued his education at Michigan State University where he earned two master’s degrees. He was a dedicated employee and worked as a school principal for 25 years at the Muskegon Correctional Facility before retiring in 1997. On November 9, 1968 he married Gail Baron in Grand Rapids, MI and together they cherished 51 years of memories filled with love, laughter, and playful banter. Bruce was an adventurous man that made the best of every encounter. He was a world traveler and has made it to every state besides Alaska. He enjoyed every cruise, 25 to be exact that he and Gail took together. Bruce liked to test his luck at any and all casinos, especially in Las Vegas, where penny slots were the place to be. Summer vacations packed in the family Dodge maxi van will always be cherished. He was a proud husband, father and grandfather and he wasn’t shy about letting you know. The trip to Vietnam he took with his daughters will be one that is never forgotten. He will always be remembered for his easy going, laid back personality that was balanced with a quick witted and sarcastic sense of humor. He was an overall nice guy that will truly be missed by many. He is survived by his wife, Gail Courim; 2 children, Brenda Kogan and Julie (Bill) Varga; 4 grandchildren, Lily, Sam, Adam, and Lexi; in-laws, Bruce (Karen) Baron; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Ann Courim. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 from 1:00PM-4:00PM underneath the S. Portico of The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444. The family requests casual attire, that’s the way Bruce would have wanted it.
