Byron M. "Barney" Hanks' Obituary
Mr. Byron Marvin “Barney” Hanks, age 75, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at a local hospital. He was born in Muskegon to Bennie and Lena (Williams) Hanks on November 23, 1929. Barney spent most of his life in this area, working for the Orchard View School District for 33 years as a custodian, and prior to that being employed at Lakey Foundry and Continental Motors. Following retirement he worked at Matson Oldsmobile as a driver and also worked at University Park Golf Course. On April 11, 1953 Barney married the former Florence Meier in South Bend, IN., and she survives him. Mr. Hanks was a long time member of the Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was a volunteer for the recent Church renovation project along with many other painting projects throughout the Church and school buildings. Barney also served on the Board of Trustees for the church several times, and was a member of the Men’s Club at Church. He served his Country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Barney was an avid Red Wings and Fury fan for many years, and enjoyed watching all his grandchildren’s many sporting and school activities. He also liked to volunteer his time, camp, and garden. Byron is survived by his wife of 52 years, Florence; 3 children, David(Debbie) Hanks, Debbie(Thomas)Alderink, and Dennis(Nancy) Hanks, all of Muskegon; 9 grandchildren, Kelly, Ryan and Daniel Hanks, Megan and Michelle Hanks, Craig(Brie) Alderink, Kurt and Erin Alderink and Jill(Mike) King; a great grandchild, Cade Alderink; 2 sisters, Lynette Jean Baker and Dorallee (Phil) VanDyk, all of Muskegon; Brothers and Sister-in-laws, James (Jeanette) Meier of Grand Rapids, Art (Phyllis) Frank of Kaleva and Paul(Bertha) Meier of Branch; many nieces, nephews, special friends and his favorite dogs Penny, Daisy, and Casey. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Julia Kemp. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 1:00 P.M. Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1215 E. Apple Ave., with Rev. Robert J. Conradt officiating. VISITATION will be held Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Ave.1-231-726-5210 MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or The American Cancer Society. Interment in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Military Rites under the Auspices of V.F.W. Muskegon County Council.
