Dear Carole, Todd, Trent, and families, Dennis was such a great guy and principal at Mona Shores High School. Although we female staff members were sure that the handsome new guy was against us, we soon learned that he was rather shy. From our Washington DC Close Up days together, to float building years for Homecoming, to his visionary leadership collaborating with all of us when going to trimesters, Dennis made his mark with students and staff members alike. I will miss his sly smile and loving stories of his family . Peace and comfort to all of you.

My fondest memories of Denny are from our backpacking trips out to Colorado. One of the trips was miraculous in nature. Todd and Trent were on this particular trip. Our goal was to make 3 summits over 14,000' in one day. Coming down the first summit we were traversing on slippery ice when Denny lost his footing and began to slide on the ice. Just before sliding into jagged rocks that would surely cause severe breaks Denny hit something and went airborne. He flipped in the air and landed seated in an upright position in a "chair" carved out of the rocks. It was like God had created this seat for Denny! None of us could believe it! We raced to his side only to find him a bit shaken but doing okay. He walked off the mountain after we prayed to thank God for Denny's guardian angel. He was a great man and a wonderful friend.

Mr. Vanderbilt was my Government teacher at Oakridge. One of my favorites. Always a gentleman. I remember being in tears over a group project and him being so kind to me. Prayers for peace and comfort.

Knowing Den over the years has been wonderful!
Our favorite night was when the 4 of us were at The house while Todd and Andrea went out to a work party. We sat and talked for hours. Guy and I still talk about how great that night was.

Den was one of the first to make me feel so welcome and at home in a different country, far away from my own home. He welcomed me into the vanderStelt family with open arms. I am Forever grateful for that. And him. And all the memories we’ve got to make after that. Blessed I got to know him as ‘Papa’.
It’s hard and it hurts to think about that he won’t be there next time I visit the fam. But his legacy lives on forever. And we’ll keep the memories alive. He will never be forgotten.

Words can not describe the incredible journey he and I have traveled together on the path of life for almost 60 years. We were not always side by side, but our thoughts were in perfect harmony. It's just as though he and I each had another brother. Total respect and admiration are the first two things I think about him. Throw in the fact that he actually taught me and modeled how to grow up as a Christian man in this crazy society and it's a perfect example of what God expects us to do here on earth. He has lived his life in a way that God gets all the glory and this world is a better place because of him! His wife, his children, his grandchildren and all who were fortunate to have known him as a friend, have been truly blessed! Rest in peace my dear friend.

So sorry to hear of his passing. He was such a class act of a person, a teacher, and a coach! He made you strive to do your best and give your best! He genuinely cared about people, and he had a unique way of leadership whereby he wanted you to always feel best about yourself when you do the right thing, even when no one was looking!
