Mr. Calvin Neil DeBruin's Obituary
Calvin “Cal” Neil DeBruin, age 87, passed away on Friday, June 9, 2017 at the Poppen Residence. He was born on May 23, 1930 to Cornelius and Ethel (Wyn) DeBruin in Muskegon. On April 12, 1958, Cal married the former Joan Grammel and they spent 52 happy years together until her passing on February 25, 2011. Cal graduated from Michigan State University and went on to become a managing engineer at Sealed Power for 34 years until his retirement in 1990. Cal enjoyed golfing, playing tennis and taking his boat “Cal’s Cutter” out fishing, especially for salmon in Lake Michigan with his sons. In his retirement he returned to pheasant hunting, a sport he always enjoyed in his youth, along with his longtime friend Jack Lundstrom. The family also made an annual trip to Mears State Park in Pentwater, where they camped along with family and many friends. Cal is survived by his children, Don (Colleen) DeBruin, Dave (Kim) DeBruin, Barb (Ron) Kuyat, Dick (Laurie) DeBruin; grandchildren, Kent DeBruin, Kaitlin (Brad) Baker, Kelsey DeBruin, Kevin DeBruin, Shelly (Mike) Przybylski, Laura Kuyat, Jess DeBruin, Luke DeBruin, Rachel DeBruin, Katie DeBruin, and Nick DeBruin; sisters-in-law, Barb Faulkner, Norma Grammel; and brother-in-law, Dick (Shirley) Grammel. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and his infant brother, Leonard. A MEMORIAL SERVICE for Cal will take place on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. (231-798-1100) at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior to the service with Rev. Scott Van Arendonk presiding.
