I met Carl 10 years ago when I started dating Doug-funny, warm, welcoming, friendly and sharp as all have said. But what I most admire and respect is Carl's extraordinary giving of care which was beyond his "always willing to help" attitude. Living next door to his mom, he and Betty shared with Doug the load of providing for and meeting Jane's daily needs. Carl performed even the personal care tasks that Jane couldn't do and, frankly, that very few men would do for their mom. He did this with patience and humor as well as respect and love. Carl did a lot of "Mom sitting" in evenings and bedtimes after Doug and I started dating... Thank you Carl-without you we might not have gotten married!

Fond memories and tears continue to flow on thinking about the incredibly sad loss of Carl. Even more so, when reading these tributes and seeing the pictures that so lovingly express the all around wonderfulness that was Carl. We will miss him and send our love to you all.

I first met Carl 19 years ago when I started dating his son and my now-husband, Matt. He was working for Frito Lay, and I was blown away by how hard he worked, his dedication and his work ethic. My husband and I lived on the East Coast for many years, but when we relocated back to the Midwest we got to see more of Carl and Betty on visits to Michigan. Carl was gentle, endlessly patient, extremely thoughtful, and had one of the best laughs I have ever heard. It was wonderful to watch him relax and unfold into well-deserved retirement over the years, and I feel lucky to have seen a hardworking man like Carl really get to relish his hobbies and the free time he worked hard his whole life for. He was incredibly proud of his son and his accomplishments and made us both feel loved and welcomed. Our daughter Charlotte really liked her Grandpa Carl’s voice and laugh, and I know he will be smiling down on her from now on.

To Betty, all my cousins and friends of Carl (my nickname for him was "Whitey" can,t remember how that got started but it was during early teenage years. Carl then came up with the nickname of "Oldie" which is still used today in reference to our dads Wendel and Robert, with respect, does anyone remember that? Going camping with the Doering family, Carl taught me how to smoke my first cigarette in a canoe at night on Lake Interlocken "thanks Carl". Every memory i have with Carl growing up will never be forgotten and thankfull for.He was and still is the best cousin to have "rest in peace". Your cousin Bruce

My dear sweet brother Carl you are missed more than you will ever know. Your cheerful positive attitude with your beaming smile and contagious laugh will never be forgotten.
Even though distance kept us apart and we weren't able to be together as much as we would have wanted to be, when we were, it was like we never skipped a beat. I am grateful that Gregg and I were able to share lunch with Carl and Betty last summer.
No one will ever be able to take your place. Your thoughtfulness and compassion for all could never be measured. We are so blessed to have had you in our lives.
