Carl J. Russell Sr.'s Obituary
Carl James Russell Sr., age 66, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 7, 2024, and was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior. Born on March 1, 1958, in Cook County, IL., Carl lived a life marked by simplicity, creativity, and a love for the moments that mattered most to him. Following graduation, Carl enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, a decision that filled him with immense pride. Although Carl’s nature was laid back, he always carried a quiet strength and a sense of pride in his service to his country.
Professionally, Carl worked as a talented tool and die bench hand for many years. But beyond his career, Carl was a gifted artist with a passion for sculpting and mixed-media painting. His creativity allowed him to express himself in ways words couldn’t. Carl found peace and fulfillment in his art, sharing pieces of his heart through each creation.
In his personal life, Carl was a man who valued the simple things. He enjoyed watching football, bowling, throwing darts, and traveling. One of his greatest joys was singing karaoke, where his lighthearted personality shone brightest, always leaving others with a smile or a laugh. But more than anything, Carl found true joy in being “PaPa” to his beloved grandchildren. PaPa’s gentle spirit, warm hugs, and playful smile will be deeply missed by each of them.
He leaves behind five children: Carl (Christie) Russell II, Jim Russell, Matt (Jessica) Russell, Katherine (Brendan) Russell-Luc, and Carlina (Vinne) Mitidieri, as well as ten grandchildren: Megan, Addison, Chloe, Kaleb, Christian, Evelyn, Jaxon, Abigail, Kelly, and Joseph. They remember the way he poured his heart into his grandchildren.
Carl is also survived by six brothers: Jack, Caz, Orval, Denver, Kelly, and Tim; his four sisters: Verlie, Reba, Tammy, and Ilene; many nieces and nephews; his best friend, Jim Faulkner; and his faithful dog, Benny, who never left his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Norma, and two brothers, Richard and Dan.
In honoring Carl’s wishes, cremation will take place and no formal services will be held. Carl wasn’t one for fuss or ceremony; he preferred life’s quiet, simple moments, and would want those who loved him to remember him with a smile, a laugh, or maybe even a song.
Though Carl is no longer with us, the love he gave as PaPa, and the simple joys he embraced, will remain in our hearts forever. Rest peacefully, Carl – you will be missed, but never forgotten.
Memorial contributions in Carl’s name may be made to Faith Hospice, whose compassionate care in his final days brought comfort to him and his family. Friends and family are encouraged to share their memories of Carl in the online Guest Book at www.sytsemafh.com
