C. Douglas Berndt's Obituary
Mr. C. Douglas Berndt, age 79, passed away on February 13, 2013. Mr. Berndt was born February 20, 1933 to Clarence and Pearl (Schroll) Berndt in Brohman, MI. He served his country in the United States Marines during the Korean War. On April 30, 1966 he married the love of his life, Patricia Yost. Doug has spent the last 40 years working as landscaper, both self-employed and formerly of Holly's Green Gardens. His love of planting trees and bushes, plus providing excellent yard maintenance services to his customers, kept him looking forward to Spring and the start of another season of work. Doug was full of life and was always busy. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his family and friends, and donating his time to the many organizations of which he was a member. He was an avid fan of Norte Dame and Green Bay Packers football, the Detroit Red Wings, and the many years of Muskegon Hockey. Doug was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lecture. A dedicated Mason, he was a member of Muskegon Lodge No. 140 F. and A.M. and previous member of Lovell Moore Lodge No. 182 F. and A. M. where he twice served as Master of his Lodge. Doug was active with many Masonic organizations including The Shriners and Scottish Rite. He spent many years helping children enjoy all the activities available at the Shrine Circus in Muskegon and Grand Rapids. He was also a member of the Lakeside Vet’s Club, where he was Past Commander and board member; past Commandant of the Marine Corps League of Muskegon Detachment 703; and regularly enjoyed all of the member benefits of Vikings Linné Lodge No. 57 I.O.V. Doug is SURVIVED by his wife of 46 years, Pat; his son, Timothy Berndt; special grandchildren, Alexandra “Alex” and Caleb Cereska; sisters, Bonnie Schoonveld and Lois Chapin; half brother and sister, Vern Arthur Matthews and Coral Yalacki; sisters-in-law, Judy Berndt and Darlene Berndt, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ronald “Jim” and Vernon; and sister, Doris. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at The Lee Chapel 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100 with Rev. Fr. Michael Olson presiding. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. VISITATION will be 6-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children or the charity of your choice.
