Charles E. "Chuck" Dobberstein's Obituary
Charles E. “Chuck” Dobberstein, 82, passed away on Sept. 22, 2018 in Muskegon. Chuck was born Feb. 10, 1936 to parents Daniel and Eleanor (Strobeck) Dobberstein. He was an engineer for Sealed Power/SPX Corp. for 39 years, retiring in 1997. He was a longtime member of the Episcopal church. He graduated from Muskegon High School in 1954, playing basketball and baseball, and he then served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Chuck was a minor league professional pitcher, signing with the Detroit Tigers immediately after high school, and he also played in the Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds farm systems. Chuck returned to Muskegon, where met and married Judy Nicles on Nov. 24, 1962, and together they raised three sons. He remained a devoted baseball fan and avid Muskegon Big Reds fan for the rest of his life. Chuck served as a volunteer for the S.S. Milwaukee Clipper restoration project and enjoyed camping, collecting coins, being with family and taking in Lake Michigan. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Judy Dobberstein, sons Daniel (Pam), John (Tatum) and Mark (Molly) Dobberstein, brother Stephen Dobberstein and sister Diane Dobberstein, and sister-in-law Lila; and he was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings David Dobberstein (Beverly), Donald Dobberstein, Susan Reterstoff (Dick) and Michael Dobberstein. VISITATION with the family will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at The Walburn Chapel, 1547 W. Sherman Blvd., (231) 759-8565. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 1:30 PM Thursday, September 27, 2018 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (1006 Third St., Muskegon).
