Charles E. Hammond's Obituary
Charles E. Hammond, age 97, passed away June 29, 2017 in Mercy Hospital. He was born on August 24, 1919 in Briggsdale, Ohio to Essie and Charles E. Hammond. Mr. Hammond was employed for Railway Express Agency from 1940 to 1966 and then worked for Shaw Walker from 1966 to retirement in 1983 as manager of the traffic department. He was a member of Forest Park Covenant Church. He was a World War II veteran and served in E.T.O. Third Army Fourth Armored Division as military police. Charles was past president of Muskegon Transportation Club, member of Masons 32 degree, F&AM, Blue Lodge #301 in Napoleon, Michigan; Scottish Rite in Grand Rapids, MI. He was an avid motorcycle rider, bowler and golfer. He married the former Helen Mossholder in 1946 and she preceded him in 1993. On March 4, 1994, he married the former Kathryn Drozd-Murphy. He is survived by his loving wife, Kay; daughter, Susan (Dennis) Burns of Twin Lake; and son, Garry (Janice) Hammond of Martinsville, IN. Charles is also survived by two step-children, Charles (Anne) Murphy of Grand Rapids and Kellie Murphy of Muskegon; six grandchildren, Cory (Tiffany) Burns, Dennis Burns, Jennifer (Lars) Mertens, Garry (April) Hammond, Kimberly (Keith) Hawkins and Erin Murphy; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son and daughter-in-law, Terry (Bonnie) Hammond; sister, Helen Miller and one brother, Paul Hammond. A MEMORIAL SERVICE with Military Rites will be held 1:00 PM, Monday, July 24, 2017 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. (231) 798-1100, with Pastor Wally Coots officiating. VISITATION with the family will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be directed to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance. Burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
