Charles Albert "Chuck" Wibert's Obituary
Charles Wibert of Spring Lake left this world too soon. He was a man who simultaneously loved John Wayne movies and classic Russian literature; Johnny Cash music and Beethoven concertos; working as a cowhand on a Wyoming cattle ranch and serving as verger at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Grand Haven; flyfishing the Pere Marquette River and traveling the world with his beloved wife Betty, who celebrated 60 years of marriage with him last July.
Teaching children was more than a career to Chuck. It was his calling, and the 70 members of the “Wibert’s Kids” fan club are evidence of his impact. While a teacher, Chuck became Michigan’s candidate for the Teacher in Space Project that Christa McAuliffe would eventually win (a competition he was happy to have lost). After retirement, Chuck enjoyed visiting nursing homes. “Who here has been forgotten?” he would ask. “I’d like to visit them.”
Chuck was insatiably curious about others, as comfortable conversing with complete strangers as with lifelong friends. He enjoyed good jokes but could scarcely tell them, as he regularly broke into riotous laughter before delivering the punchline. He fiercely defended justice, equality, and mercy. He loved a good party. He knew few joys better than the taste of a fine Scotch.
When Chuck gets to Heaven, he will be eagerly awaited by his parents, Fred and Helen Wibert, and his sisters, Ila Barnett and Norma Jean VanDyke. In addition to his wife Betty, he leaves behind brother Fred (Beverly) Wibert of Memphis, MI; children Amy (Bruce) Eckert of Holland, Julie (Bret) Hines of Coopersville, Traci (Jonathan) Scott of Grand Haven, and Chip (Katy) Wibert of Mulberry, FL; grandchildren Aaryn (James) Bierly, Sarah (Ryan) Phillips, Leanne (David) Taylor, Ryan (Jessica) Conran, Eileen Conran, Harper Scott, Sean Wibert, and Sophia Wibert; great-grandchildren Madelyn, Theodore, Mason, Kathryn, and Lydia. They all miss him beyond measure.
The memorial service for Chuck will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2022, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Grand Haven with Rev. Dr. Jared C. Cramer officiating. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials to St. John’s Episcopal Church or the American Heart Association are appreciated.
