Christopher T. McGuffey's Obituary
Christopher “Chris” Tyrone McGuffey, age 60, passed away in Grand Rapids, MI, on Monday, January 22, 2024. Chris was born in Muskegon, MI, on September 18, 1963, to John and Dorothy (Copeland) McGuffey Jr. He graduated from Muskegon High School in 1981 and lived the rest of his life in the Muskegon area. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. Chris was a handyman and worked for many years as a self-employed contractor. He greatly enjoyed the process of fixing and building homes and always paid a lot of attention to the detail of his work. He was involved with the Muskegon Civic Theater and performed many times over the years at the Frauenthal and Beardsley Theater in Muskegon. He enjoyed travelling and trying new food, and he had a good sense of humor. More than anything he loved spending time with his friends and family, and he was always looking out for the people around him.
Chris will be lovingly remembered by his three children: Shawntay (Kenneth II) Johnson of Houston, TX, Christopher McGuffey Jr. of Muskegon, MI, and Aaliyah Johnson of Muskegon, MI; one granddaughter, Charlotte Johnson of Houston, TX; six siblings: John McGuffey III, Jeff Wilson, Steffan (Charlene) McGuffey Sr, Marie (Samuel Jr.) McGuffey-Bursey, Niccole McGuffey, and Ashley McGuffey; former wife, Mary Ware; close uncle, Danny Bell; two close cousins: Terry Copeland and Shytelia Pearson; close friend, Julius Ledbetter; and many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Jr. and Dorothy McGuffey; son, DeShaun McGuffey-Ware; and sister, Diane Garrett.
A FUNERAL SERVICE will be taking place for Chris at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 26, 2024, at The Sytsema Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 737 E. Apple Ave, Muskegon, MI, 49442, with VISITATION taking place an hour prior. Memorial contributions may be made out to The American Cancer Society or Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.
