Clarence E. Start's Obituary
Mr. Clarence Erwin Start, age 72, passed away Wednesday evening, March 23, 2011. He was born October 2, 1938 in Muskegon to John and Jerine (Langeland) Start. Clarence owned and operated Start’s Excavating for 26 years before retiring in 1993. He was a Muskegon County Commissioner for 10 years, and also spent 6 years on the County Road Commission. He had also worked for Fruitport Schools for 10 years before retiring. He was a member of Unity Reformed Church, where he served as a Deacon and Superintendent of the Sunday school. Clarence loved being with and around people! On July 18, 1957 he married Joyce Arlene Buit in Muskegon and she survives him along with 4 children, Terry (Joanne) Start, Larry (Mary) Start, Kenneth (Sheryl) Start all of Muskegon, Sheri (Carl) Wentzlof of Fruitport; 10 grandchildren, Kristy (Steve) Sweet, Matthew (Anna) Start, Joshua Start, Chelsea Peterson, Aaron (Kristyn) Start, Eric (Tillie) Start, Sheri Sue Start, Allison Wentzlof, Donny Wentzlof, Alex Wentzlof; 5 great-grandchildren; brother, Jim (Barb) Start of Norton Shores; sister-in-law, Shirley Start of Casnovia; several nieces and nephews, and leaves behind many, many, friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, David and Gerald Start. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 2:00 PM Saturday at Unity Reformed Church with Rev. James Bos officiating. VISITATION will be from 6-9 PM Friday at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. (231) 798-1100 and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Muskegon Rescue Mission or the Unity Reformed Church Building Fund.
