Mrs. Cora T. Briggs' Obituary
Mrs. Cora T. Briggs “Sunshine”, age 85, passed away Friday morning, November 2, 2012. She was born August 31, 1927 in Smithen, Arkansas to Frank and Lossie (Sterling) Cummings. She completed her school years in Arkansas and accepted Christ at an early age. She worked as a dietician for the Heritage Hospital (Seaway Clinic) for 20 years and 10 years for the Brookhaven Medical Care Facility before retiring in 1989. She was a very faithful member of Zion Baptist Church, belonged to the Mother’s Board, Mission Auxiliary, was a Sunday School teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, and participated in the General Baptist State Convention. She was also a foster parent for 10 years and a foster grandparent at Glenside School until her health declined. On January 11, 1947 she married Bennie O. Briggs in Detroit who preceded her in death on December 6, 2007. SURVIVORS include 9 children, Mildred (Terry) Hamilton, Frankie (Paul) Hopson, Colliss “DeeDee” Marble all of Denver, CO, Rubin (Doris) Briggs, Gregory (Sandra) Briggs all of Muskegon; Burneta “Bonnie” Briggs of San Antonio, TX, Arnold “Dino” (Denise) Briggs of Monroe, LA, Debbie (Jimmie) Fox, and Mary Moore of Muskegon; with 38 grandchildren and 2 of whom she raised, Lakiyia Briggs and Regina Lewis; among many great and great-great-grandchildren and a special niece, Vanessa Kitchen; brother, James Earl Cummings and sister, Johnnie Bell Hales both of Muskegon Heights; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by 3 sons, Bennie, Jr., Charles Edward, and Bruce Briggs; 3 sisters, Verdia M. Manning, Bobbie Jean Means, and Irma L. Cummings. SERVICES will be 11:00 AM Thursday at the Zion Baptist Church with Pastor Trent L. Williams officiating. Burial will take place in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. VISITATION with the family will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday at The Sytsema Chapel, 737 Apple Ave., (231) 726-5210. MEMORIALS to the Alzheimer’s Association will be appreciated.
