Darrell LaVern Wheat's Obituary
Darrell LaVern Wheat, age 78, of Spring Lake passed away Saturday, January 14, 2012, at a local care facility. He was born May 23, 1933 to Clifford and Bertha (Allers) Wheat, and married the former Dorothy Johnson on October 13, 1956 in Ravenna, Michigan.
Darrell served his country in the Marines during the Korean War. Darrell and his wife owned and operated Miss Lisa’s Ice Cream Shop for 31 years where Darrell was known to the customers as “Mr. Lisa." He also worked at Johnston Boiler for 29 years. Darrell was a member of United Methodist Church of the Dunes in Grand Haven. He enjoyed going out for dinner, wintering in Florida for 25 years, and loved golfing.
Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy; daughter Debbie (Ed) Page of Spring Lake; 2 grandchildren, Andrea (Josh DeGarmo) Page and Emily Page; 2 great-grandchildren, Austin and Braydin; sister, Janet (Clifton) Helms of Whitehall; brother, Wayne Wheat of Fort Worth, Texas; sister-in-law, Mary (Randy) Little of Marne, Michigan; brother-in-law, Dale (Shirley) Johnson of Grand Haven; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Bromley and brother, Roland Wheat.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at United Methodist Church of the Dunes with Rev. Daniel Duncan officiating. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service. Military rites will be provided under the auspices of the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28. Memorial contributions to United Methodist Church of the Dunes or Hospice of North Ottawa Community are appreciated.
