Daryl N. Gates' Obituary
“To be absent from the body [is] to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8) Daryl N. Gates, age 74, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on November 8, 2019 in Spring Lake after a long battle with vascular dementia. He was born on December 21, 1944 to Charles and Ruth (Tucker) Gates in Auburn, NY. Daryl was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Over the years, he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and an AWANA leader. For most of his 38 years at Muskegon Public Schools, Daryl worked as a guidance counselor. Laura, his wife of 48 years, survives him along with 3 children, Nathan (& Kelly) Gates, Marty Gates and Mindy (& Jason) Decker; 3 grandchildren, Taylor and Cam Gates and Emma Decker; sister, Sarah (& Ken) Walker; brothers-in-law, Jim (& Judy) DeBruyn and John (& Diane) DeBruyn and sisters-in-law, Marcia Gates and Margie DeBruyn, along with many nieces and nephews. Daryl was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David Gates and Roger Gates; father and mother-in-law, Arnold and Marion DeBruyn and brother-in-law, Pastor Lawrence DeBruyn. THE FUNERAL SERVICE for Daryl will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, November 15, 2019 at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St, Norton Shores, MI 49444, with Pastor Scott Church officiating. Visitation with the family will take place one hour prior to the service. Memorials can be directed to Hospice of North Ottawa or Trinity Baptist Church. Burial will take place at Pine Hill Cemetery in Fruitport. Share memories with the family at www.sytsemafh.com.
