David C. Coats' Obituary
On December 30, 2017, Dave Coats decided he wanted to be disconnected from life-support. He fought hard to become qualified for a valve replacement but in the end, it wasn't an option. He was surrounded by four generations of family those last two hours and we held both of his hands until his heart blessed him with one final beat.
Dave was a gentle and dignified man, an accomplished (or at least avid) sailor, teller of lame jokes, performer of lame magic tricks, could not tap dance but lord knows he tried, and could not play the banjo despite years of practice. Kids loved him. He was ‘grandpa’ to many. He loved them back, perhaps because they would not tire of his talents. His arm wrestling skills on Thanksgiving were legendary and he was almost always a gracious looser.
Dave could fix and build anything, loved his black labs and loved his family above all else. He always had a firm handshake and a welcoming smile for everyone he met. He is responsible for introducing his family and so many of their friends and their children to Wheatland, a gift that is a legacy and will now become an annual celebration of our love for him for generations to come.
Dave was born February 26, 1927 in Grand Rapids. He proudly served in the US Navy and after graduating from MSU with a degree in Hospitality, he went on to own and operate Prospect Point Hotel Resort, followed by 25 years with Care Corp.
He is preceded in death by his parents Bryon and Caroline (Pape) Coats and his sister Carolyn Daszewski. Dave is now in charge of watching over the loving family he left behind: his wife of 68 years, Mary Grace; children Cathee (Larry) Lemke, Janet Coats, James Coats and Mark (Jen) Coats; grandchildren Gabriel (Melissa) Doran, Grady (Jenny) Doran, Rachel Coats Wanty, Matt and John Coats; great granddaughter Mariella Doran; and all his nieces and nephews.
Dave was a faithful Presbyterian for 65 years. The memorial service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven on February 3, 2018 at 11:00 with Rev. Troy Hauser Brydon officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28 Honor Guard. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at church. Memorial contributions to the Spring Lake Lions Club are appreciated. Share memories with the family at their online guest book at www.sytsemafh.com.
